YMCA Student's Digital Take on Malcolm X Mural

In our workshops with students at the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA, Mark Sabb, Luis Reyes, and I asked them to bring images that they wanted to respond to. We also asked them to react to the Malcolm X mural at the corner of 3rd and Kirkwood. They recreated the image by each adding their own visual and textual twist to the original image of the mural. The Digital Youth Work page, designed by Mark Sabb, opens with the original mural image. The student’s recreation responded to both the mural and my poem “Malcolm is ‘bout More Than Wearing A Cap”.

The Bayview Hunters Point YMCA

The Bayview Hunters Point (BHVP) YMCA serves youth and families through a variety of diverse programing opportunities. Disproportionately, BHVP residents face a multitude of challenging realities including health disparities, unemployment, foreclosures and neighborhood violence. Its Family Resource Center, on-site alternative high school, collaborations with the Department of Public Health, and our Teen Center are examples of how our YMCA addresses community challenges. Its Teen Center participants recently expressed an interest in becoming more active in solving community problems.
