(Written in response to violent attacks against Asians during the COVID-19 crisis.)
Do you call yourself God-fearing?
Devoted to “do on to others”?
Does your God condone your violence?
Your ignorance?
Your corruption?
Does your God hate your neighbor?
Like you do?
Does your God share your love?
Backward "E" or not, the name of the street my family lived on at the top of The Hill in Hunters Point, in San Francisco, is one of the few details I remember about my early childhood.
Afar is both a place and a people in Ethiopia. I captured the image in this post during my first visit to Ethiopia when I was about the same age as the young Afar man in the photograph. I was struck by his elegance and his "do." Everyone within the frame of this picture, with a change of clothes, could have been standing on a corner in Chicago.
